The Blue Coat Hospital and library at Manchester were founded by Humphrey Chetham in 1651 for the education of 40 poor boys, from about 6 to 14 years of age, in the Manchester area. The Blue Coat Hospital came to be known as Chetham's Hospital and later became Chetham's School of Music. Humphrey Chetham amassed his fortune through the textile trade, primarily in trading fustian made from linen and cotton.
Draft announcement signed by J. Cooke announcing the decision of the Trustees of the Blue Coat Hospital in Manchester to employ boys in useful labor. The announcement specifies that the winding of cotton was determined to be the easiest and most suitable work for children between the ages of 10 and 14. This announcement is followed by the terms according to which the boys would be employed, particularly regarding the division of the profits. There is also a nota bene indicating there is a room provided in the college for the boys to work in and that wheels will be provided by the trustees, as well as specifying that thirty boys will be constantly employed. - Subject Terms:
