Notes:
Julia Maria and Charlotte Elizabeth were the children of Julia Nunn (1798-1879) and John Barmby (1777-1834), of Vines Villa, Yoxford. Upon their mother's death in 1879, all hereditaments were sold for the benefit of their brother John Goodwyn Barmby (1820-1881), a prominent Chartist and socialist. The list of items in their mother's will suggests a family of modest means, with a particular interest in science, including boxes of shells, minerals, fossils, petrefactions and books on geology, mineralogy, conchology, and a painting of Hagar and Ishmael in the Wilderness. She also left her daughters and son shares for Whitwood and Normanton Collieries in Yorkshire, her writing case and box of oil colors, a snuff box and books on the History of England, Battle of Waterloo, and flowers with a cash sum of £24 each.
Bound in contemporary green crushed morocco, spines with "Album" lettered in gilt, tooled with floral decorations.
The first volume is inscribed at front: "Miss Julia Maria Barmby, from her Mamma's very old friend, Capt. John Bingle, 1850." The second is inscribed: "Miss Charlotte Elizabeth Barmby, from her Mamma's very old friend, Capt. John Bingle, 1864." In both cases, the date appears to have been modified. The two volumes are similar in composition (and binding), and were probably conceived as a pair. Content includes manuscript poetry and prose, engravings, lithographs, drawings in ink or graphite, watercolors (including a number in a Chinese manner), embossed and decorated cards, tinsel prints, devotional texts and images, a specimen of embroidery, and pressed fowers.
Both volumes include a cut-paper cobweb. In the first volume, the top layer of the cobweb depicts a mansion, below which is drawn a mouse (revealed when the web is lifted up with the attached string). The design is encircled by text: "This pretty mansion Mr. Sowis' Hall, Is now on sale & may be viewed by all. Just lift the latch and you may see the house. But with due caution or you'll scare a mouse." The cobweb in the second volume bears a simpler depiction of flowers, under which a bird is revealed.
