Notes:
The son of Peter Mark Roget, of Thesaurus fame, John Lewis Roget continued to revise and expand his father's opus into further editions. In 1879 he penned a critical addendum, with his own etchings, to Turner's Liber studiorum, and later went on to write A history of the "Old Water-Colour Society" (1891), which gives an overview of the main English watercolorists of the eighteenth century.
Bound in contemporary black straight-grained calf, with brass clasp.
Roget's drawigns are executed on the rectos of 67 leaves of the volume. All but one drawing is signed or initialled by Roget. A small number bear titles. Some drawings near the front of the volume are dated, from late 1840 to 1841 (the blank volume may have been given as a Christmas gift in 1840). The majority of drawings also name the artist that Roget has copied. The 67 drawings include 31 after work by George Cruikshank, 18 after Tony Johannot, 2 after H.K. Browne (one signed "Phiz"), 1 after Gigaux (?), and 1 after William Harvey. It's unclear whether the 14 remaining drawings are originals by Roget, or uncredited copies.
Roget would have been 12 years old at the start of 1841, and the drawings are unusually accomplished for his age. Roget's drawings after Cruikshank capture the humor of the original caricatures. The drawings after Johannot are of a more varied nature, reproducing Johannot's illustrations from works such as Don Quixote, Paul and Virginie, and writings by Molière.
