The image is a picture puzzle, depicting a scene from the Bulgarian Horrors (also known as the April Uprising of 1876). It features a figure who is probably a bashi-bazouk, an irregular soldier of the Ottoman army. In his raised hand he holds a curved scimitar. At a quick glance, the soldier's attack appears aimed at a bare tree stump. Upon closer looking, the viewer can discern the faint outline of kneeled figure hunched over the tree stump, presumably a Bulgarian nationalist. The card was probably issued to garner British support for the Bulgarian cause. - Subject Terms:
