- "I wanted to play with the juxtaposition of knowing what they are (harmless, paper cut-outs) that have somehow come alive. I hope it evokes a suspension of disbelief. ... It is amazing to me that a 2-dimensional image can be given so much life just by cutting it out."--Artist's statement.

An altered book, created from an unidentified monograph on butterflies. Julie Cockburn has cut out the illustrations from the published work, partially folded them lengthwise to give the pieces a three-dimensional structure, and then glued the butterflies into place so that they seem to hover over the pages of the original book (that is fixed in an open position). - Subject Terms:
