The daguerreotype depicts a studio portrait of David Miller, master shoemaker at Perth, Scotland. Miller wears a bow tie and waistcoat. The image is apparently a copy, not from life.
The reverse is engraved: "Mrs. D. Miller, 71 High Street, Perth." The Scottish Census of 1851 records a David Miller, age 36, master shoemaker (with 18 workmen), at 71 Parliament Close High Street, Perth. With his wife, Isabella (also age 36), the census lists three children. In the 1861 census, David and Isabella Miller remain at 71 High Street, now with five children. David is listed as "Shomaker master employing 8 men, 6 boys, & 2 women."
