Notes:
The image is derived from a print: Prospero disarming Ferdinand, act I, sc. 2, from an original drawing in the collection of Her Royal Highness the Duchess of York ; Henry Bunbury, esq. del. ; F. Bartolozzi, esqr. sculpt. London: Thos. Macklin, 1793.
The needlework picture is by an unidentified artist. The majority of the surface is embroidered; large portions of the characters' clothing is made from pieces of felt. The characters' faces and hands are drawn in watercolor, on paper that has been cut and integrated with the needlework.
The work depicts a scene from Shakespeare's The Tempest, act 1, scene 2. Outside Prospero's grotto, the Duke stands waving a wand in the direction of Ferdinand at left, Miranda kneeling beside her father, tugging at his arm. Behind them Ariel plays harp.
