- Sample book of machine lace patterns, by an unidentified compiler, probably intended for use by an English retailer. Though some samples may be of French manufacture, most are probably English, intended for an English market. The volume (now disbound) includes samples of conventional machine lace (embroidery on tulle) and chemical lace. Samples include imitations of: "Torchon" ground; various needle laces, including Tenerife lace; filet lace; and button-hole stitches.
The designs may have been more frequently intended for interior decoration (e.g., curtain panels, valences) than for fashion. Other designs appear appropriate for hat veils. A sample with eyelet embroidery may have been used on a petticoat or child's dress. At the end of the volume is one large hand-made sample of lace. It may have been included to facilitate an imitative machine-made design.
Samples are accompanied by labels noting the "registered" numbers of each (i.e., registered with the Board of Trade in London). - Subject Terms:
