- Notes:
- The firm of Elkington & Co. was founded in Birmingham, in the 1830s, by George Richards Elkington and his brother, Henry Elkington. By the late 19th century, it was the leading silver- and electroplate company in the world, with nearly 1000 workers.
See link herewith for Elkington & Co. tea trays, also from the Zipporah S. Schefrin Collection.
All five pieces have a simple fluting design at the base and beading around the top rim. The handles of the teapot, coffeepot, and hot water jug bear two bands of ivory.
All pieces of the set bear the number 10699 on the bottom. Beneath the number are four hallmarks, from left to right: "E & Co Ld" -- maker's mark for Elkington & Co. Limted; an anchor, the city mark for Birmingham; date mark 'w', for 1896-1897 (on teapot, coffepot, and creamer) or 'x', for 1897-1898 (on sugar bowl and hot water jug); a Lion Passant, indicating sterling purity. For dating, see Jackson's Hallmarks (2016).
The set was issued by Elkington & Co. in a locking case, made of oak. The interior of the case is lined with blue fabric, with indentations for receiving each of the five pieces in the set. A circular leather label on the underside of the lid, stamped in gold, reads: "Elkington & Co., Liverpool. Silversmith by appointment. VR." Presumably, the set was sold from Elkington's retail branch in Liverpool. The center of the top lid bears a shield-shaped indentation, the earlier inset now absent. - Subject Terms:
