Notes:
Dedicated, at foot of broadside, "To Field Marshal His Royal Highness, The Duke of York ... " by "Henry Angelo Junr." The suffix appears to indicate that the print was made on behalf of the younger Henry Angelo (1780-1852). In 1817 he assumed management of the Angelo academy upon the retirement of his father, Henry Charles William Angelo (1756-1835).
The print was likely intended as an advertisement for the teaching methods of the Angelo fencing academy in London. A row of 13 figures along the top, in various uniforms of the Rifle Brigade and Highlander regiments, illustrates preparatory movements: "First position. Second position, in 2 motions. Four balance motions. First position. Third position in 2 motions. Five extension motions." At center is a large circular target diagramming the seven cuts and guards. At bottom is a summary of "Words of command."
