Notes:
Title from box top, which bears a hand-colored lithograph depicting two fashionable ladies, within an ornate border.
Two paper dolls, each with four sets of dress, and wooden stands. All pieces are lithographically printed and hand-colored, with varnish. Each doll and dress is two-sided. The two sides of each dress are glued together at the edges, allowing room for the figures of the paper dolls to be inserted between the two sheets (the head emerging through the open neck). Also present are two hair pieces (which can be slipped atop the heads of each doll) and two boxwood bases, painted black, into which the feet of each doll may be inserted.
The dolls appear to represent sisters; the costumes, although different, are designed to be used in pairs. The paired costumes include: a) Wedding dresses, one with the bride holding a bible in her right hand and a handkerchief in her left; the other dress similar but with a fan in her right hand and the dress trimmed in red at the foot; b) Domestic dresses for receiving visitors, one in green, with lace banded trim decoration, the other dress in turquoise with black gauze semi-height trim and black felt collar; c) "Going out" dresses, one with gray jacket trimmed in red over a bright yellow dress, the other with a dark blue cape trimmed in black velvet over a dark purple dress; d) Mourning wear, one with a black cape over a black dress, with clutched handkerchief, the other in a similar dress with green fan and a handkerchief.
