- Notes:
- BEIN Zi +5574 Copy 1: Variant: z6r ends "de diasprea". Binder's stamp: Thibaron-Joly (from a Paris firm during the decade 1874-1885). This is probably the copy described in Répertoire méthodique de la librairie Damascène Morgand, Paris 1883, n. 5872. In particular, the "insignifiant lavage à la figure du sacrifice à Priape" corresponds (contrary to general bibliophile belief, f. m6r is rarely censured, so this is a distinctive trait).
BEIN Zi +5574 Copy 2: Variant: z6r ends "diaspre di". Provenance: 2 abraded and almost invisible stamps on the titlepage. One can be recognised as the stamp "MD" [Magliabechianum Duplum] and the bottom one has a characteristic very dark ink and round shape and is the stamp of the Magliabechi library in Florence, now part of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale di Firenze. Binder's stamp: Bound by F. [Francis] Bedford. The binding would have been done before Bedford's death in 1883. It may be the copy that appears in the sale of Frederick Startridge Ellis in 1885, n. 990.
BEIN Zi +5574 Copy 3: Variant: z6r ends "diaspre di." Provenance: Autograph: sum Beati Rhenani; bookplate: Ex libris Frank Altschul. Binding: French, end of the 18th century as confirmed by the stamp "BRUNCK" at foot fo spine of the classical scholar Richard Francois Philippe Brunck, 1729-1803, who spent his entire life in Strasbourg. Bookseller's notice on the endpaper makes reference to a "curious notice in Renouard's handwriting", which seems to have disappeared.
Sometimes attributed to Leon Battista Alberti.
Imprint from colophon; date precedes published statement in imprint.
Signatures: 2⁴ a-y⁸ z¹⁰ A-E⁸ F⁴.
Woodcuts have been attributed to Giovanni Bellino due to the ones on [10b] and [21a] being signed "b." Others have attributed them to Raffaelle. Alexander Pope thought them by Francia or Andrea de Mantegna. Lake Price attributed them to Carpaccio. Used by others without acknowledgement.
