- "This set [1722], which was first issued in 1939, existed in three versions, but only for two years in each version. This is the third version, with plastic drums, extra frogging on the drummers and the substitution of a tenor drummer for one of the side drummers of the previous version. ... The refurbishment of the band was part of the reissue of all the Britains bands in 1956 ..."--Opie.

Set of hand-painted die-cast lead toy soldiers sold by Britains Ltd., ca. 1956. The original box bears the title "Britains soldiers, regiments of all nations" on the box top. A printed label on the side of the lid reads: "Pipes and Drums of the Scots Guards, no. 1722. Made in England."
The original set probably consisted of 20 soldiers wearing the uniforms of the Scots Guards (in blue, red and white), comprising: 12 pipers, 1 bass drum player, 1 tenor drum player, 4 snare players, 1 cymbals player, and 1 drum major. This allotment matches the image provided in Opie (see note herewith). The Yale Center for British Art copy includes an additional 7 soldiers of the Scots Guards, presumably added from other sets, comprising: 1 cavalry officer on horseback; 3 soldiers with shouldered rifles; 2 soldiers running with bayonets; and 1 additional piper, in green uniform. - Subject Terms:
