Manuscript version, finely illuminated, of The gathered lilies, the printed version of which was published by H. Hering. The publication was undated, but contemporary advertisements suggest that it was issued in 1857. Bent's monthly literary advertiser (December 12, 1857), under the heading "Works now first published," includes the following description: "The gathered lilies, printed in colours and gold, and very elaborately and beautifully illuminated from designs by Mrs. Howard Vyse and Miss Fanny Greville ... In fancy binding, oblong 4to, price 1ℓ 2s 6d. Subscribers' names now received at H. Hering's ... N.B. The above two publications are well adapted for Christmas presents."
The text of the poem was republished in A phonic reading book for young children (Manchester: John Heywood, 1876), where the author is named as Frances S. Hodgson.
The manuscript is written on thick board, on rectos only. It comprises a half-title, title, a quote from the Song of Solomon, and eight leaves of the illuminated manuscript poem. - Subject Terms:
