Wood watercolor box, manufactured by John Walker & Co., London, ca. 1880. The box is intact, with original brass hinges and clasps. The underside of the lid and a portion of the inner tray bear the original printed labels. The latter includes a title: "The Farringdon Colour Box, J.W. & Co., London." The label beneath the top lid reads: "Superior water colours for the use of students and schools arranged as approved by the Society of Arts. J.W. & Co., London."
The box includes a single compartment, divided into slots for brushes, two disc-shaped ceramic mixing dishes, and 12 watercolor cakes. The 12 pigments are named on the upper label: Indigo, Vermillion, Ultramarine, Prussian Blue, Bice Green, Gamboge, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Crimson Lake, Vandyke Brown, Yellow Ochre, Light Red. In the present specimen, three watercolor cakes (Gamboge, Vermillion, and Yellow Ochre) are missing, possibly lost rather than used. The cakes appear minimally used.
The bottom of the box is inscribed in black ink: “English knowledge prize awarded to Master Buchanan Campbell, Geo. Bryan, Fernlea, Moffat, 29th June 1880.” - Subject Terms:
