- John Henry Dallmeyer achieved prominence as skilled maker of lenses for optical instruments, including telescopes, microscopes, and photographic equipment. He founded J.H. Dallmeyer Limited in 1859. See: Hannavy, J. Encyclopedia of nineteenth-century photography.

Column-mounted stereoscope manufactured by J.H. Dallmeyer, ca. 1870. The viewer bears Dallmeyer's name on an ivory label just above the lenses. The stereoscope may be disassembled into three pieces: the viewing box, and the base and stem of the brass stand to which the viewer is mounted. Knurled brass knobs under the viewer adjust the rack and pinion focusing and angle of the viewer. A mirror under the lid reflects light onto card mounted views; the lid is closed for viewing glass transparency views, with illumination provided by the frosted glass panel at the rear. The cast brass base has lead infill.
The viewer is designed to be used with stereoscopic photographs, double pictures of the same scene that produce the effect of three-dimensionality when viewed through a stereoscope. - Form/Genre:
