Notes:
The creator of the manuscript is probably May Chatteris Fisher (1874-1910). Fisher would later study at the Manchester School of Art (where Walter Crane was Director of Design from 1893 to 1898). Subsequently, Fisher became a designer of bookplates and a book illustrator for children's stories published by Sherratt & Hughes. In 1904 Fisher married the landscape painter, William Smallwood Winder. The two were among the founding members of the Lake Artists' Society (1904).
Stitched, in green silk thread.
Manuscript fairy tale of "The new beauty & the beast" by May Chatteris Fisher, with numerous illustrations. The skill level appears to be that of a girl around eight years of age, so the manuscript probably dates to circa 1882. The cursive text is written in graphite throughout, with occasional corrections. In the first half of the story, illustrations are in graphite and watercolor; in the latter half, in graphite alone.
The story recounts the tale of Rosabelle, a young princess taken away and imprisoned by a wizard beast, who commands an array of orcs and dragons. Prince Hotspur, with help from the fairy Dewdrop, tracks down the princess, slays the beast and his minions, and marries Rosabelle upon their happy return to the palace.
