- Notes:
- John Lindley was one of the most eminent botanists of the 19th century. From 1829 to 1860 he was Chair of Botany at University College, London. He also lectured at the Royal Institution and the Chelsea Physic Garden.
"Lindley, when appointed professor in London, like Hooker in Glasgow, had never heard an academic lecture in his life. Unhampered by tradition, both lectured well. ... Lindley's son Nathaniel wrote an account of his father's procedure. 'He took infinite pains with his lectures. He never read them; but he prepared notes for the subjects to be attended to and arranged these with care ... He prepared large coloured drawings to illustrate his lecture and hung these up on a frame near where he stood. ... At the end of each lecture he invited the students to come and tell him anything they did not understand and he gave them any flowers not previously distributed in order that they might take them home and examine them. ..."--Stearn, William T. John Lindley, 1799-1865, gardener-botanist and pioneer orchidologist. Woodbridge, Suffolk : Antique Collectors' Club, 1999 (33).

Manuscript copy of lectures delivered by John Lindley in the junior course of botany at University College London, with 168 pressed botanical specimens serving as illustrations. The copyist is unidentified, however the name of the daughter to whom it is dedicated (Mary Elizabeth) does not match that of a daughter of John Lindley; the hand also does not match that of Lindley. The text is written on rectos only (generally), in pen and black ink, in a single neat hand throughout. A table of contents (pages [3]-[10]) lists 28 lectures, each with numerous subjects. This is followed by a list of 168 illustrations, which are in fact pressed botanical specimens, affixed to versos of some the sheets via small paper bands. The specimens are numbered, each matched to descriptions in the text. Some specimens are accompanied by small diagrams, drawn in black ink. Occasionally such diagrams appear independently. The volume concludes with a 10-page index, written in two columns.
The lectures begin with general botanical subject matter, before proceeding to discussion of particular plants, beginning in lecture 7. Lectures 1-6 include topics such as organs of plants; germination of the seed; terminology of leaves; inflorescence; position of the stamens and anthers; and structure of the ovary. The chapters that follow are organized by botanical order of the plants discussed, e.g. Cruciferae, Violaceae, and Ranunculaceae. - Subject Terms:
