"The jar, being the container for these specimens, is a neat line drawing. I wanted this to contrast with the contents of the jar which I wanted to be full, colourful and chaotic. The creatures are a selection of magnified, largely microscopic pond dwellers and not the newts, frogs and sticklebacks that you might expect. Firstly, the colour for pond water was printed with texture to give the water an uneven look. It was over printed with different colours (up to four printings) to add to the density, achieve variations in the colour and hopefully to create the effect of cloud mud. The under colour and line printings for the creatures used a range of bright colours to contrast with the water. The colours are mixed in with each other, in some instances producing a marbled effect and while very similar, each print from the edition is a little different. For the final printing for the line of the jar, I mixed green and silver ink."--Artist's description.
