Artist's book. Vegetable papyrus made from cabbage. The leaves are attached to accordion-folded stubs. Bound in cabbage covered gray card boards. Dyed and painted endsheets.
"My work is principally an exploration of structure, form and tone based on reality. It looks at issues regarding the shared consumption of food and the memory it creates, freely bridging the idioms of abstraction and representation by using everyday ingredients such as fruits and vegetables. The material for the books was developed through a desire to create an edible surface onto which I could print. Using similar techniques to the ancient Egyptians, the overlapping of thinly sliced fruit or vegetable sections laminate to create a unique paper. Each sheet of papyrus becomes an arrangement of colour and tone retaining the essence of its origins, without sacrificing the essential reality of the natural form. It was clear that the colour and patterns created within these tactile sheets were an ideal material in which to create unique books which require no further embellishment."--Artist's statement.
