- Description based on the copy at the Yale Center for British Art, in which the imprint has been trimmed from the bottom margin. The English Catalogue of Books, 1881, lists a related broadside (The gospel compass, for sailors of all nations, designed by W.C.M.) published by Partridge, in June.
Probably by W.C. Mills, the attributed designer of The gospel compass : for sailors of all nations (which is also signed W.C.M.). Both works were probably designed on behalf of The Special Mission to Deep-Sea Fishermen, founded in 1881 by E.J. (Ebenezer Joseph) Mather. See: Rule, John. "The Smacksmen of the North Sea: Labour Recruitment and Exploitation in British Deep-Sea Fishing, 1850-90." In International Review of Social History, Volume 21, Issue 3 (December 1976), pp. 383-411.
Evangelical broadside employing maritime imagery, a ship's wheel, and signal flags to convey Bible messages. The central image is of a large ship's wheel, with Bible texts placed on the hub, handles, spokes, and interstices. The whole is framed by various texts expressed in signal code, interspersed with nautical vignettes with Biblical captioning. - Subject Terms:
