"Murder, myth and magic. In western culture birds belonging to the corvid family, particularly crows and ravens have negative associations in society. Throughout history sightings of these birds were feared and viewed with superstition, perceived as a bad omen, foretelling disaster, death or battle lost. They are birds of high places, of mountain and treetop. They exist on the margins and in-between places. In folklore, they are said to traverse the land between that of the living and of the dead. Their black plumage, the negative of white, intensifies the sense of menace and foreboding associated with these birds. Supposed cohorts of witches, sorcerers and their magic, these inauspicious birds are feared, hated and demonized. A bird mythologized."--Laid in sheet. - Subject Terms:
