Notes:
Engraved title page of Domenico Basa's Roman edition of 1590 is retained for Book 1. Imprint from colophon of Book 1.
At foot of title page: "In calce al front.: Intagliato da Natal Bonifatio da Sibenicco"
The text of Book 1 is reset from edition of 1590; the engravings by Natal Bonifacio are renumbered and reprinted. The engraved and letterpress leaves are numbered in single sequences in both books, with the addition in Book 1 of engraved leaves 66 secondo and 86 secondo. Numbers 54, 66 and 86 in Book 1 apply to double-page engravings. The 2nd leaf of Book 1, conjugate with the main title leaf, is unnumbered and blank. The 3rd leaf is an added engraved title page with portrait of Fontana, his arms at foot and those of Sixtus V at head. In Book 2, leaves 4-5 form a double plate, and the numbers 22 & 27 both apply to three leaves, a double plate followed by a letterpress leaf. The last unnumbered leaf is an engraved elevation for a wall fountain. It has no legend, but shows Moses striking the rock in the central niche and so may relate to the Aqua Felice; cf. plate 45, Book 1. Ornaments and initials in various styles.
Fowler architectural collection of the Johns Hopkins University, p. 108
Includes a frontispiece portrait of the author.
Includes index to Book 1.
BAC: British Art Center copy imperfect: lacks Book 2. Bound in contemporary gilt-tooled calf; rebacked. Stamped in gilt on front cover: "Richard Bullocke, 1666." With inscriptions of Abraham Roumieu, architect, 1756, and Mathew Goodricke, 1621. The latter is written over an earlier indecipherable inscription.
BAC: British Art Center copy interleaved with an unsigned manuscript translation into English, probably in a 17th century hand, on 61 full-size leaves, 2 smaller leaves, and 19 slips. The title page of the English translation is also inscribed by Roumieu (and dated 1756). There is no evidence that Matthew Goodricke travelled abroad or knew Italian, but he would have known Inigo Jones, through his work at the Office of Works, and Nicholas Stone, and would have had access to those with the requisite language skills to translate the work.
BAC: British Art Center copy is also extra illustrated with four additional plates engraved by Natale Bonifacio.
