The HMS Sutherland was a 50-gun fourth rate ship of the line of the Royal Navy, built at Rotherhithe according to the dimensions laid out in the 1733 proposals of the 1719 Establishment, and launched on 15 October 1741. The Sutherland participated in the following battles: Louisburg 1758, Quebec 1759, Martinique 1762 and Havana 1762.The ship was sold out of the Navy in 1770. See: Lavery, Brian. The ship of the line (1983), v. 1, p. 171.
Augustine Walker is known to have made at least three other cut-paper dioramas of Royal Navy warships. Walker's model of the HMS Defiance (1762) is also in the collections of the Yale Center for British Art (Folio C 2014 2; link provided herewith). Additionally, there are two works by Walker in the collections of the National Maritime Museum (OBJ0531 and OBJ0532), dated 1761 and 1765, respectively. The inscription on the first of these indicates Walker's place of activity: "Augustine Walker Invt et Fecit at Rye in Sussex 1761."
Hand-colored cut-paper diorama of the HMS Sutherland, circa 1763, by Augustine Walker. The ship is depicted running before the wind with her main sail being reefed, the hull set within pleated paper sea, with open gun ports and guns, chain plates with deadeyes, standing and running rigging, detailed stern monogrammed GRIII, and bow decoration. Crew and officers (figures in profile) are depicted about their business, with two Black musicians (playing horns) depicted on the poop deck. Against a wooden background, painted sky blue, with light clouds. Signed and dated on the lower right edge "A. Walker Invt. et fecit. 1763." Contained within wooden case for wall hanging.
