- The artist Henry Fitzcook (b. 1824) achieved primary success as an illustrator of books, including a number of books intended for children. In the mid-1860s, he was a significant proponent of the graphotype process, a form of relief printing using chalk blocks as a matrix.
Nine prints, by various artists, published in: Divine and moral songs for children, by Isaac Watts ; illustrated in the new graphotype engraving process by W. Holman Hunt, W. Cave Thomas, J.D. Watson, G. Du Maurier, T. Morten, C. Green, H.K. Brown, Marcus Stone, H. Anelay, Florence Claxton, M.E. Edwards, etc etc. under the superintendence of H. Fitzcook. London : James Nisbet and Co., [1867?].
The present set, representing 9 of the 27 plates that were published in Divine and moral songs, appear to have been collected by Henry Fitzcook. Each is framed by a contemporary mount, bordered in gold. Related manuscript material is mounted to the reverse of each, including short letters, receipts, and payment checks. Artists represented in the set include William Holman Hunt, Hablot K. Browne (Phiz), Marcus Stone, Thomas Morten (a work anticipating Beardsley's late style, with the note "T. Morten committed suicide shortly after etching this design"), Florence Claxton, John Dawson Watson, C. Green and William Cave Thomas.
The prints have been preserved in a portfolio with other material compiled by Fitzcook, including: A set of seven original drawings and verse titled Poems in pen & pencil (1846), cataloged separately (see link provided herewith) -- "The interpreter shewing Christian passion and patience," a wood engraving by Samuel Williams from The pilgrim's progress (1840) -- A sketch in graphite by Fitzcook, titled "The return of Enoch Arden," presumably intended as an illustration for the poem by Tennyson (but unpublished). - Subject Terms:
