Notes:
The artist is probably Elizabeth Mary Bodenham (née Weld), of Rotherwas. Bodenham was the author of Mrs. Herbert and the Villagers, or Family Conversations on the principal duties of Christianity, 1823 (an exposition of Catholic faith).
Bound in contemporary dark green half roan, with green pebble grain boards; linen cloth tie.
The first leaf bears the autograph "Eliza Bodenham, June 21st, 1843." Drawings are in varied media, including 23 in pen and ink (some over graphite), 15 in graphite, three with monochrome wash, and one full watercolor. A number of drawings depict local architecture, including building details, ruins, and dwellings set in the landscape. Identified locations include: Nero's Bridge, Albano, Cisterna, Civita Castaluni [Castellana?], and Ancona.
Some of the drawings depict the rural population of Italy, including: "Lavatrice di Tivoli" (women washing clothes), "Costume di Cerbara," "Donna di Frascati un Ermita," "Crociara ed un Paistore," and "Famiglia di Ciociani partendo dal loro Paese." A graphite sketch near the end of the volume depicts a woman painting at an easel--perhaps a self-portrait.
