- The John Wager of the present journal is probably the same as the John Wager who was author of Oldlane & other poems (Leeds, 1871), and Notes from Norway (Leeds, 1861).
Bound in contemporary dark green half morocco and marbled boards.
Manuscript journal kept by John Wager, with manuscript title page: "Journal of summer excursions, John Wager, 1839 to 1843." Copied in a single neat hand, presumably by Wager, in pen and black ink, within ink ruled borders, and running captions identifying locations. Wager embarks on a series of tours of Yorkshire and the Lake District, accompanied by his companion Mr. Frankland, and at other times by Mr. Howard.
The opening tour is captioned "Narration of an excursion through the south and south-west of Yorkshire, 1839." It includes visits to Aberford, Castleford, Pontefract, Melton, Doncaster, Sprotborough, Conisburg Castle, Sheffield, the Loxley, More Hall, and Wharncliff Woods. In the next section, in August 1840, Wager records "Notes during a commercial journey through part of the southern counties," in which he visits Sheffield, Chesterfield, Nottingham and Wilford. Wager's "Excursion through Wensleydale and Craven" took place the following summer, and incudes good descriptions of the gardens at Studley Fountains Abbey, Hackfall, Aysgarth Force, Ingleboro Cave, and Malham Cove. In 1843, Wager embarks on a tour to the Lakes, visiting Coniston, Langdale, Wastdale Head, Buttermere, Keswick, Borrodale, and Grasmere. The final section records "A trip to Clee-Thorpe (a letter to a young niece, October, 1844)" and concludes "On Saturday night at 9 o'clock I was again to be seen at a certain ugly old house in the town of Aberford." The West Yorkshire Archives have a volume of sketches by John Wager, with topographical notes, which might have been made on these excursions. - Subject Terms:
