Manuscript account book, mid-19th century, recording purchases made by W. Thomas from George Sprackett, wholesale, retail & export druggist, 15 Wine-Street, Bristol. The volume bears Sprackett's name and address on the first page and contains entries from January 1853 to May 1882. Written on 195 pages, with each entry detailed and priced. Thomas purchases a great variety of items from Sprackett; representative purchases include pearl barley, vinegar, mustard, camphor, oxalic acid, "mix of pills," quinine mixture, "rotten stone" (tripoli), linseed oil, and castor oil, along with numerous other powders, pills, ointments, pastes, syrups, and oils. Also recorded are purchases of various horse medicines. Thomas's total bill with Sprackett amounts to about £10 to £20 per year.
Accompanying the account book are three packets of printed labels for products sold by Sprackett. Presumably, the labels were to be adhered to bottles or other forms of packaging. The first of these advertises "Sprackett's condition powder. A valuable compound for horses and other cattle, out of condition from cold, or other causes. A certain cure for hide-bound, grease, eruptions, impurity of the blood, & loss of appetite, &c." A second label, similar in character, describes "Celebrated Newmarket alternative condition powders for horses ... They increase strength, invigorate the spirits, prevent swelling of the legs, [etc.] ..." The third label advertises quinine pills prepared by Sprackett.
Also present are two trade cards for Sprackett. One reads: "George Sprackett, chemist and druggist, medicine chest depôt, 58, Broad Quay, near the drawbridge, member of the Pharmaceutical Society. Established 1843." The second: "Sea and family medicine chests supplied, or carefully re-fitted with the purest drugs, by G. Sprackett, wholesale, retail & export druggist, 15, Wine-Street, (opposite the pump,) Bristol." - Subject Terms:
