Packet of embossed gilt papers ornaments sold by Rudolph Ackermann at his Repository of Arts, circa 1810. The envelope consists of a simple sheet of folded paper, with printed description on both sides, and a mounted example of the ornament (a strip of looped rings) on the front panel. In addition to the 12 strips of rings called for by the packaging, there are four additional ornaments, included designs featuring the figures of Vulcan, Cybele, and Juno.
The ornaments included in the present packet are illustrated in "R. Ackermann's pattern card for embossed ornaments in gold, white, or other colours," an 8-page engraved catalog published in the June 1810 issue of the Repository of arts, literature, commerce, manufactures, fashions and politics. Accompanying the catalog is an article titled "Observations on fancy-work, as affording an agreeable occupation for ladies," pp. 397-398. The article suggests that such ornaments might be used for the decoration of "vases, fire-screens, hand-screens, flower-stands, boxes, and other articles." The article also describes the preferred papers and colors with which to use the ornaments, as well as the method for fastening them, with gum arabic.
The looped rings in the present packet are represented in the catalog as item no. 129. Also depicted in the catalog is Cybele, 9d. each, and Juno, 9d. each. The ornament depicting Vulcan is not included in the catalog. - Subject Terms:
