Schoeser, M. Printed handkerchiefs, 2
Large ivory silk handkerchief printed in black ink, with text in tabular form, engravings of differing carriages at each corner, four engraved views of London landmarks, and a further four small engravings of London gentlemen. The small initials of S.? I. R. are neatly stitched in upper right margin.
Laid out for easy reference, the handkerchief lists hackney coach fares around London, together with regulations and routes. It is illustrated with views of St Paul's Cathedral, Covent Garden Theatre, the Royal Exchange, the New Post office, and the King's theatre. At each corner is an engraving of different horse-drawn coaches. "Fares to the theatres" from locations around the city are listed together with tabulated charges for travelling around London. A summary of the regulations governing the operation of hackney coaches in the capitol is included, which covers with such matters as "refusal to take a fare," "deposit for waiting," and "abusive language." - Subject Terms:
