Manuscript diary and sketchbook of a continental tour made from May 17 to July 2, 1820, by Anne Mills, presumably accompanied by her husband Thomas Mills, Rector of Sutton, 1821-1879. Includes numerous outline sketches, in graphite, of carriages, gondolier, scenery, and rural characters, and one full-page drawing of a grotto, in pen and ink with additional gray wash. The text includes many corrections, additions, and deletions, and one of the sketches is marked up with a color key in order to make a finished watercolor. Another page indicates colors to be used in painting Mount Cenis. The tour commences in Amiens, and Mills travels through France, over the Jura Mountains via the Mount Cenis Pass to Geneva, and thence to Italy, Mantua, and Padua, before concluding in Venice. It is written in a lively style and includes observations on museums and galleries as well as many of the other major sites. - Subject Terms:
