Manuscript diary kept by Louisa Jane Hingston, née Cuddeford, started on the day of her marriage to Charles Hingston, November 16, 1880, in Croydon. The diary documents the couple's tour of Europe in 1880 and 1881. The travelers purchase Cook's railway tickets through Belgium, Germany, Italy, and then Marseille, from which they travel onwards to Spain. They return through France, arriving home in Croydon on 20 May 1881. The tone throughout is colloquial: "Well I think Naples has considerably disgraced herself ..."; a visit to Pompeii is "one of the days never to be forgotten." The diarist also records money drawn while travelling in Spain; letters written while travelling; and letters received. Expenses are also noted, with hotel bills, etc.
The diary retains its original slate mounted on the rear inner board. A number of visiting cards are loosely inserted, together with a guide book to the Church of Saint Ursula in Cologne.
