Notes:
Title from binder's spine title, stamped in gilt.
Bound in late 19th century dark green half morocco and marbled boards. The marbling, also used in the endpapers, employs a distinctive four-lobed feather-like design composed of red, yellow, and green.
Album of 29 specimens of seaweed (algae) compiled by an unidentified collector. Specimens are pressed and pasted onto small blank sheets of paper, which are in turn pasted into the blank leaves of an album. Each leaf bears a single seaweed specimen. At the bottom of each leaf is a printed label bearing the scientific name (genus and species) of the seaweed specimen. Presumably, the labels were produced expressly for albums such as the present volume. All specimens are well preserved and retain a fair amount of color.
The volume bears the bookplate of the Art Workers Guild, featuring a wood-engraved image of the Guild's building at 6 Queen Square, London. The Art Workers Guild was established in the 1880s, in close association with the Arts and Crafts Movement. Just above the bookplate of the A.W.G. is a printed label reading "Part of the Frank L. Emanuel bequest." Emanuel (1865-1948) was a painter, engraver, art instructor, and writer on art, active in London. He was also a member of the Art Workers Guild. While it is possible that Emanuel compiled the present album of algae specimens, there is no direct evidence to suggest that he did.
