The 1881 census records a Madeleine Mathiss, school teacher (unmarried), aged 37, of French birth, dwelling at 5 Chapel Street, Layton with Warbreck, Lancashire. Bound in contemporary brown pebble grain cloth, gilt-stamped "Scrap Book" on the upper cover. With bookseller's label: N. Porter, bookseller, &c., 13 Westbourne Grove, Bayswater.
Album of 30 specimens of seaweed collected along the southern coast of England and the coast of Northern Ireland, pressed and pasted onto blank leaves of a mid-19th century scrap book. The album is inscribed at front: "Madeleine Mathiss. Le 1er janvier 1869." Most leaves bear multiple specimens of seaweed. Each leaf is annotated in brown ink with the locations where the specimens were collected. These locations include Eastbourne (nearly half of the album), Torquay, Southend, Brighton, and Glenarm (Northern Ireland). The specimens are well preserved and retain a fair amount of color.
