Porcelain mug manufactured by the Worcester Porcelain company, decorated with transfer-printed engravings by Robert Hancock. The mug is bell-shaped, with a molded strap handle. The engraved designs include a half-length portrait of Frederick the Great of Prussia in full armor, pointing with his left hand to an ensemble of martial trophies, including three flags bearing the names of nine notable military victories. The mug also bears the engraved figure of Fame blowing two trumpets. The present mug lacks the image of the cockerel, present on several similar pieces (see Dawson), and which is thought to be the rebus of Robert Hancock.
The mug is signed with the initials RH and the image of a small anchor, the rebus of Richard Holdship, printer. It is dated 1757 beneath the portrait of the Kign of Prussia. - Subject Terms:
