- Scope and Content:
- Describes an excavated cave complex and the surrounding area. Wales is quite taken by the vista, writing, “….mountains behind mountains till they are lost in the clouds forms altogether such a scene as is highly pleasing to the Painter or the Poet.” The sculptures likewise meet his approval: “They are executed in such a manner as to be in no wise inferior to the works of our best modern master.” The text also includes remarks on the durability to the wood found in the caves.
